Current Critical Industry Trends

President Trump announced new tariffs on April 2. The new policy includes a 10% tariff on most goods entering the U.S. and higher rates for approximately 60 countries. Many countries have indicated they will soon impose retaliatory tariffs.

Ocean

Hapag-Lloyd launched its new China-Philippines service with the inaugural vessel having arrived in Manila on March 17. This marks the first ship to sail on the newly established route from China to the Philippines.

A new warning has been issued to ships near the Malacca Strait in Singapore after six incidents of piracy-related boardings or harassment were reported within a 48-hour period. These incidents have raised concerns about safety in the region. The total number of such incidents in 2025 now stands at 35, according to ReCAAP.

Ports

Belgium’s nationwide strike disrupts ports, airports, and services. The 24-hour strike, which began on Monday, March 31, sees employees uniting to demand fair working conditions and the protection of their pensions.

International

A new report reveals that the global e-commerce market is expected to grow by 15%. This increase is attributed to a boost in consumer confidence, advancements in digital infrastructure, and the continued rise in online shopping. As more consumers embrace digital platforms, the market is expected to see sustained expansion.

Trucking

The average weekly diesel price rose for the second consecutive week, driven by a rise in crude oil futures prices on Monday. Experts attribute the increase to concerns over restrictions on Russian oil exports.

Alberta revamps truck training with pathway to Red Seal certification. The province is investing $54.1 million over three years to support the Class 1 Learning Pathway. Only 31% of Alberta’s 149,000 Class 1 drivers are currently employed as truck drivers.

Rail

Mexico-linked railroads shine amid flat North American freight trends. CPKC and FXE were the only Class 1 carriers to post revenue growth in 2024. Rail volumes tied to international trade now account for 38% of total traffic.

Air

Air cargo demand steadies with mixed regional performance in February. North America sees slight decline while Asia Pacific rose 5.1%. Jet fuel prices dropped to $94.6 per barrel, easing operational costs.

Technology

AI investment fast-tracks supply chain innovation and growth. Over 90% of executives and leaders say AI insights are key to avoiding disruptions. Nearly 40% expect ROI in less than a year.

Trucker Bathroom Access Act gains momentum in Washington. The bill ensures truckers can use restrooms at pickup and delivery sites without requiring new construction. Groups like OOIDA and WIT say this is key to retention and equality

E-commerce boom drives record growth in commercial vehicle demand. Sales of light commercial vehicles will hit 18.7 million units this year while heavy truck sales rise 15%. The market is growing at a CAGR of 9.2% through 2033.
