Current Critical Industry Trends
Trucking groups across America are pleased with the Trump administration’s plan to review emissions rules. The current rules, GHG3 and NOx, implemented during the Biden administration, were deemed unachievable by industry experts.
The newly appointed Canadian Prime Minister has canceled the carbon tax. The Canadian Trucking Association expressed gratitude to the new PM and called for increased support for the industry.
Ocean
The ceasefire in the Red Sea has ended, with the Gaza Strip being hit by Israeli military strikes. Most of the global merchant fleet is likely to avoid the area in favor of safer, more reliable routes. For now, there’s little indication that this shipping crisis will be resolved anytime soon.
Ports
An increase in port call fees may negatively impact smaller U.S. ports. The proposed $1 million fee on Chinese-built ships could influence which ports a carrier includes in its route. This could lead to increased congestion at larger ports, while medium and smaller ports may lose traffic altogether.
Ports across Canada and the U.S. are facing significant delays due to weather and rail issues on both coasts. Dwell times are increasing, with Halifax and Vancouver ports seeing some of the longest delays in North America.
International
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive has voiced opposition to the proposed port sale. CK Hutchinson’s plan to divest its international port operations has drawn significant criticism and concern. Chief Executive John Lee stated, 'These concerns deserve serious attention.'
Trucking
Low-rolling-resistance tires gain momentum in trucking. With fuel savings of up to 7% per 1,000 miles and lower emissions, LRR tires are reshaping fleet efficiency and long-term sustainability.
Rail
CPKC and Patriot Rail to open transload hub in Texas. The new facility in Denton will enhance supply chain efficiency, serving key industries like steel, cement, and lumber in the booming DFW region.
Air
Newcastle airport to develop new cargo facility for UK trade growth. Set on a 750,000 sq ft site, the Airlink hub will streamline freight operations, supporting industries like pharma, auto, and high-priority logistics.
WestJet cargo expands global reach with virgin Atlantic partnership. The deal brings Virgin Atlantic back to Canada after 20 years, offering up to 20 tonnes of daily cargo capacity between Toronto and London.
Technology
Cummins X15N earns top honors for clean energy breakthrough. Designed for natural and renewable gas, the engine is paving the way for a greener future in commercial trucking with proven global performance.
Other
Abandoned shipwrecks in Fiji raise safety and environmental concerns. Over 25 derelict fishing vessels near Suva Harbor pose major risks, as cleanup costs soar to $170,000 with owners refusing removal notices.
